The most populous state is Virginia, with 747,610 people, and the largest city Philadelphia with 42,444. The US population is about equally divided between New England and the Middle Atlantic States, and the South. Only Massachusetts reports having no slaves.
Nineteenth Century
1800 The second US Census recorded a population of 5,308,483, including 896,849 slaves, and increase of 1,379,269 and 199,168. The center of the US population was 18 miles SW of Baltimore, a westward shift from 1790 reflecting the expansion of the frontier.
