Description
Blizzard is a small, and likely quite
shallow lake in the Portage River drainage, 27¼ miles ESE of Crane
Lake and 12 miles northwest of Ely. Scarcely ¼ mile across,
Blizzard has no apparent surface water inlet or outlet. Nor does it
have a maintained portage.
The forests which surround Blizzard burned in the Civil War era fires
of 1863-64. With some portions burned again in 1875. The area
immediately surrounding Blizzard did not suffer significant blowdown in
the Independence Day windstorms of 1999.
Campsites
Blizzard is not on any maintained route
and supports no established campsites.
Planning Considerations
Blizzard is on the way to nowhere, and
unlikely to be a destination in its own right, unless you're camped at Big
Rice and looking for a vigorous afternoon bushwhack/hike.
Wildlife
Blizzard, with all the marshy terrain
nearby, should be good moose habitat.
Notes and Comments
Blizzard is also known as Robin. If
you do get in to Blizzard/Robin send us a photo. We'll publish it
here. (It's the only way most BWCA paddlers will get to see this lake.)
