Description
Lon is a small, likely quite shallow
lake in the Vermilion River drainage, west of the BWCAW boundary, 17¼
miles SSE of Crane Lake and 27¼ miles WNW of Ely. Roughly ovoid
in form, Lon is ¼ wide in its narrow dimension, and less than ½
mile in length. Largely surrounded by soggy lowlands, Lon has no apparent
surface water inlet or outlet. Nor does it have a maintained portage
link to the world beyond.
The Independence Day windstorms of 1999 did not damage the forests around
Lon, the tree loss from blowdown occuring farther south around Trout.
Campsites
Lon is not on any maintained route
and supports no established campsites. It is, however, outside of
the BWCAW proper and so subject to the less restrictive regulations of the
Superior National Forest.
Planning Considerations
Lon is on the way to nowhere, and unlikely
to be a destination in its own right.

Notes and Comments
If you do get in to Lon send us a photo.
We'll publish it here. (It's the only way most BWCA paddlers will
get to see this lake.) |
