Description
Contest is a small lake in the Stuart
River drainage of the Iron Lake basin, 24 miles
ESE of Crane Lake and 20 miles NNW of Ely. Barely a quarter mile across,
Contest drains into the Stuart River 1¾ miles above Stuart
Lake. The forests which ring Contest Lake are largely of 1875
origins, with those off the eastern shore dating back only to the fires
of 1894. This region of the BWCA escaped damage in the 4th of July
windstorms of 1999, which caused such extensive tree loss to the south and
east.
Campsites
Contest Lake supports no established
campsites.
Planning Considerations
Contest Lake is on a short spur off the
Stuart River route, barely 30 rods up a small creek. The creek may
be navigable, but be prepared for liftovers and the usual obstacles of small,
wilderness streams. To the east lies the Sundial
Lake Primitive Management Area (PMA).
Wildlife
The shores of Contest are quite marshy,
as is much of the area immediately downriver. Probably good moose
habitat.
Notes and Comments
Contest is something of a deadend destination
and probably not oft visited.
