Description
Copper is a small, deep, elbow lake
on the northern edge of the Hairy Lake Primitive
Management Area just east of Tuscarora.
A mile long but a narrow 32 acres, its depths exceed 50'. At its northeast
end, a 100 rod portage connects with Snipe
to the north, while at its extreme western end a 69 rod portage runs west
to Hubbub and, 255 rods beyond, to Tuscarora. A small stream entering along
the southern shore runs down from Little Copper, every bit as large as Copper
itself, while a second connects with a series of small ponds to the south.
Campsites
Copper has no established campsites.
Planning Considerations
For most BWCAW visitors, Copper is a lovely
pass through lake between Snipe and Tuscarora and nothing more. However,
a small, unnamed stream flowing into Copper along the south shore drains
a series of small ponds in the Hairy Lake Primitive Management Area and
provides access, albeit challenging, south to Sora
and beyond to Din, Mass, Ell, Iris,
Fetters, Octopus, and the Frost River.
Then there is Little Copper Creek, which beyond Little Copper Lake seems
to offer possibilities for the exploration of the Juniper Lake area just
west of Long Island.
Wildlife
Copper supports populations of White Sucker,
Northern Pike, and Burbot.
