Description
Virgin is a small, kidney-shaped lake
in the chain of small lakes linking Gillis to
the east, with Gabimichigami and Little
Saganaga to the west. Barely ½ mile long at its greatest reach,
it sits at the west end of a low ridge forming the southern shore of larger
Peter Lake. It lies 30 rods west, and 25' below
West Fern, but 80 rods south, and 54' above,
Peter and 90 rods northeast, and 64' above, Little Sag. Excepting a small
stretch of the northwestern shore, the forests ringing Virgin have grown
up subsequent to the big local fire of 1864.
Campsites
Virgin has but one campsite, along the
northwestern shore.
Planning Considerations
The small chain of lakes extending east
from Virgin appears to be under-traveled, especially when compared to larger
nearby lakes like Little Sag and Gabi.
Wildlife
Virgin is not noted for its fishing but
does support a large population of White Suckers (Catostomus
commersoni).
Notes and Comments
Noting the names and juxtaposition of the
lakes Peter and Virgin, one wonders if they might not have been named by
a missionary priest, or perhaps just an earthy lumberjack.
