Description
West Fern is a small lake in the chain
of smaller lakes which form an east/west line above the long south shore
of Peter Lake. A ¼ mile at its widest point
and ¾ mile long from east to west, it sits 30 rods east, and 25'
above, Virgin to the west; 20 rods from Powell
to the east. The forest surrounding West Fern has all grown up since the
big stand replacing fire of 1864.
Campsites
West Fern has two campsites, one at either
end; just north of the portage in from Powell and on the small point in
the northwest corner. We have never seen these sites occupied.
Planning Considerations
The string of little lakes from Powell
to West Fern to Virgin is lightly traveled. We've
found the portage trails at either end of this lake supporting a lush growth
of fresh green grasses at the height of the summer canoeing season. A pleasant
change it is from the usual muddy trails.
Wildlife
West Fern supports a moderate Lake Trout
(Salvelinus namaycush)
population with above average growth. This may be in part attributable to
the high availability of smaller White Sucker (Catostomus
commersoni) which provide forage for the larger game fish.
Notes and Comments
Like Powell to the west, worth a visit; worth
a stay.
